WWE 12 – Initial Thoughts

Just wanted to drop in with two cents on WWE 12… as everyone’s well aware, WWE 12 has had it’s fair share of problems – for instance, in the two weeks since the game’s release, THQ’s online servers have struggled to cope with the demand. (more…)

Heavy Rain – PS3 Review (of sorts)

It may be one almighty late-slip, but having just completed Heavy Rain, I’m inclined to say that it is one of the best, if not simplest, games I’ve ever played. (more…)

Naughty Bear Review

If you’ve read my earlier posts, you’ll be aware that Naughty Bear was one of those oddball games that myself and my fiance were really looking forward to this summer. Unfortunately, having played it, all I can say is that this was one of the bigger gaming let-downs that I can remember.

No advance reviews came out for this game, which is usually a bad sign, as was the game’s £45 price point (no reductions anywhere, not even the token £5 in the high street to make it an “appetising” £40)… so we bit the bullet and decided to wait to rent it. Thank God we did. (more…)

FIFA 10 vs Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 – Delayed Review: Football’s Coming Home

With the World Cup winding down this weekend, I thought it was as good a time as  any to go back to the past (if you will) and crack out two of last year’s football titles.

Having originally been a fan of FIFA games when I first started playing on the PC, then on the PS2 and Xbox, I switched my allegiances to Pro Evolution Soccer for a few years, sacrificing the licences of FIFA for the ability to edit my own Sunderland team in PES. After all, it was around this time when Sunderland weren’t in the Premier League, so back in the days when FIFA only featured Premier League sides… you can guess why I switched! (more…)

What Grinds My Gears: Video Game Updates

Last night, my fiance decided to have a quick game of Little Big Planet on the PS3. Although we’re currently not heavy gamers (more due to our environment than anything else), Little Big Planet is one of those games we like playing, especially to have a quick blast of the vast array of created levels. “Fixed” PS3 Bug Sheds Light On Problem

Well, I guess it really was the leap year bug – I turned my PS3 on half an hour ago, only to be told it was March 1, 2010… confirmation, if you needed it, that this whole charade was down to the console taking March 1, 2010 (in reality) as February 29, 2010.

Still, the wrong date thing is nothing a quick visit to the settings menu can’t fix, but I’ll be wondering if Sony’ll be able to avoid a repeat in 2014 without having to have everyone buy new machines.

Anyway, no damage has been done to my PS3. If only I’d managed to grab the right episode of Kitchen Nightmares – instead of an unaired repeat from season 2 that’s somehow managed to sneak into the lineup as a “new” episode!

Coming soon… random iPhone app reviews, sports talk (are Sunderland doomed?), something from the past, and perhaps some random game reviews…

PS3 clock bug fixed

So the PS3 bug has apparently fixed itself – according to Joystiq (http://tinyurl.com/yl5tqnk)… I’ve not turned mine on since February, but all of the signs appear to be good.

Still, it’s sad that a £300 (at launch date) piece of equipment can be felled by something as simple as the concept of a leap year!

PS3 staying off for now!

Well, I was planning to turn on my PS3 tonight, if at least to take a screenshot of what I would expect to be a screwed up console. That ain’t happening folks, especially not after Sony’s latest update, in which they effectively tell people with the old-style PS3 not to turn it on!

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

It all but looks like the bug is being caused by the PS3 thinking that today is February 29, 2010 in some weird manifestation of what people call the Y2K+10 bug. Ah well, guess I’ll be watching my media through my PC for once tonight!

Sony Glitch Locks Out Old PS3s?

According to a story on TheRegister – http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2010/03/01/chubby_ps3_psn_lockout/ – and just about everywhere else, as February turned to March, old-style PS3s were locked out of Sony’s PlayStation Network.

Horror stories so far include being unable to play games and even data loss, but weirdly people with the new “slim” PS3s are mainly unaffected.

As someone with an old PS3 and a custom installed hard drive, I’m kinda hoping that mine isn’t affected, and that I’ll not be going home to nothing more than a BluRay player tonight!

More to follow…
