Well look at that – it’s mid-month again, and time for another blog post! E3 unveiled a load of new video game accessories and games for the coming year – and while there will be the majority of people licking their lips over Move, Kinect and the 3DS, it’s some of the smaller game titles that have caught my eye.
First things first, I’m looking forward to the yearly iterations of the FIFA and Madden series (and cannot wait to play even FIFA 08 on my 42″ HD TV when the move finally comes, but don’t get me started on that solicitor-delayed rant) – but there’s a few other titles that I really can’t wait to get my hands on.
As a fan of the Lego series of games, Lego Harry Potter (Years 1-4) will be an interesting one to play for someone who’s barely watched the movies, let alone read the books. The games based on an existing story seem to play better than those loosely based on characters (Lego Indiana Jones 2, ahem!), and the simplistic but sometimes puzzling style of the Lego games have been a good hook for both me and my largely non-video-game playing fiance. Same goes for the Lego Clone Wars game as well, when that finally comes out.
Naughty Bear… that game will give kids nightmares. If you’ve been raised on soft cuddly teddy bears, then this game will shatter your dreams as you control the ubitiquous character on a naughty rampage. Scoring points as your deeds get ever naughtier, this game will probably be a love/hate kind of title – loved by those who adore the cute, but twisted concept, and hated by those who’ll slam it as “Grand Theft Teddy Bear… without the hookers”. And to those people, all I’ll say is “Red Dead Redemption :: Grand Theft Horsey”.
Little Big Planet 2 promises to be an even bigger success than LBP 1, especially with the fact that all custom-made levels will work with LBP2 (so you can keep playing Little Big Ninja Warrior, or Little Big Wipeout) – while the addition of “create your own game” modes mean that “Little Big Wipeout” could well be a racer or a conversion of the TV show!
Rock Band 3 seems interesting with the new instruments, but I hope they keep up with the backward compatibility that has made this series superior to Guitar Hero in recent years (as far as being able to play all your songs in one game (largely!) without having to swap discs every five minutes). Rock Band 3 not working with “old” instruments will be as big a fail as the keyboard could be a success.
Other thoughts: Gran Turismo 5 – I’m bored of waiting for this to come out… wake me up when it’s actually on our shelves! Infamous 2 – I’ve just bought Infamous for £10 on Platinum, but won’t play it until I get the HD TV back. It’s kinda like Fallout 3 as in being nearly impossible to play/read on a non-HD TV screen. Twisted Metal – seems interesting, but this’ll definitely be a rent-first, play-later kinda game.
And finally for now – the one must-have game (at least for us): Raving Rabbids Travel In Time! Altogether now… BWAAAAAAAAH!
